According to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Department (UKMTO), a tanker exiting the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified object Thursday night; the same night, a separate vessel burned and sank in the area. According to IRNA, UKMTO also reported Friday morning receiving a new incident notification near Hasib, Oman.

According to reports by Hamshahri, Ettelaat, and Donya-ye Eqtesad, UKMTO released information provided by a company's security officer: a tanker belonging to a company exiting the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified object. UKMTO noted it had received no reports of crew injuries or environmental damage. According to the same sources, UKMTO had previously received another incident report north of Hasib in Oman, about 9 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz: a ship captain reported seeing a vessel on fire. Regional authorities identified the craft as a "lanch" (a small cargo or passenger vessel). The craft experienced a major fire, listed to one side, and ultimately sank. Local authorities confirmed the crew was evacuated safely.

IRNA and ISNA cited a separate Friday morning report: UKMTO received a new incident notification near Hasib, 25 nautical miles inside the Strait of Hormuz. Whether this Friday notification and the 9-nautical-mile fire reported the night before are the same incident remained unverified in open sources; the distance and directional difference between the two reports suggests they could be a separate, third incident. Who fired the projectile or which weapon system it came from was not confirmed; UKMTO statements did not name a responsible party.

How the Persian press covered it

Source (orientation)Headline / framing
IRNA (State news agency)"Fire on a vessel" — highlighted the Friday morning report from 25 nautical miles northeast of Hasib.
ISNA (Semi-official)Reported the same fire notification without specifying distance.
Hamshahri (Principlist)Described first the "unidentified object" striking the tanker, then the "lanch" that sank.
Donya-ye Eqtesad (Technocratic)Used the same UKMTO statement as Hamshahri, in the same order.
Ettelaat (Moderate-traditionalist)Reported the story under the headline "a tanker was targeted," leading with UKMTO's tanker report.

All five sources cite UKMTO as the primary source. However, the relationship between the Friday morning report cited by IRNA and ISNA and the two Thursday night incidents reported by the other three sources remains unclear in open sources.

Context

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway through which a significant portion of the world's oil passes. As U.S.-Iran tensions in the region have risen, UKMTO incident reports on tankers have increased in frequency. An earlier report on oil reaching $117 due to Hormuz tensions covered the impact of regional strain on global markets. Similarly, a report on internet cables being targeted in Hormuz addressed the region's sensitivity regarding critical infrastructure. International maritime authorities continue to record incidents in the area as "unidentified objects" or "security events" without naming an aggressor, leading to claims of responsibility remaining unverified. A fourth tanker caught fire the following day, October 31; in that incident, Sepah cited a mine strike while the Financial Times pointed to a deliberate attack.
