According to IRNA's report, citing the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations organization (UKMTO), a notification was received Monday of a tanker struck by two unidentified objects as it sailed 72 nautical miles east of Saudi Arabia's Ras al-Khafji coast. ISNA and Hamshahri, both citing the same UKMTO statement, reported that a tanker transiting the Persian Gulf in a southeasterly direction was struck on its port side by two unidentified objects. UKMTO announced that the entire crew was safe and the situation was under control, with no reports of environmental impact to date. The organization advised ships to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activity.
Approximately six hours before this incident, Sunday evening, the Revolutionary Guards Navy Public Relations announced separately that two "rogue tankers" traversing an unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz had struck a naval mine and exploded. According to IRNA's report, the Guards claimed that one of the tankers was in the super-tanker class and that they had shut down navigation and identification systems to pass secretly "with the support of the terrorist American army" through the prohibited route; the Guards alleged that both vessels remained stationary after the incident. Ettelaat, in its report also carrying the Guards' statement, repeated this framing.
The two incidents differ geographically: the strike reported by UKMTO occurred hundreds of kilometers northwest of the Strait of Hormuz, near Saudi Arabia's coast; the Guards' mine claim was specific to the Strait of Hormuz. No report connected the two incidents to the same vessels or to each other. Additionally, the Guards' claims of "rogue tankers" and a mine strike have not been verified by UKMTO or other independent maritime sources; therefore, the tankers' identities, number, and the mine strike claim are unconfirmed.
How the Persian press covered it
| Source (orientation) | Headline / framing |
|---|---|
| IRNA, ISNA, Hamshahri (state/semi-official/municipality) | Carries UKMTO's statement as-is, without attributing responsibility, using the phrase "unidentified object." |
| Ettelaat (established daily, moderate-traditionalist) | Reports the Guards' mine claim under the headline "two large tankers exploded," and passes along the Guards' language including "terrorist American army" and "rogue" without questioning. |
In UKMTO-focused reports, three sources of different orientations (state, semi-official, municipal) use nearly identical, neutral language; when reporting the Guards' own statement, Ettelaat chose to pass along accusatory language without scrutiny.
Context
Tanker security incidents in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz have increased in recent weeks. It was reported on October 29 that an unidentified object struck a tanker and a separate vessel sank, and on October 30 there were reports of separate attack allegations against a tanker called the "Louise Mina". Tensions in the region are running parallel to the stalled indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran following the 12-day war in June 2026, and to the possibility of renewed military confrontation. While independent maritime security sources like UKMTO typically refrain from assigning responsibility for reported incidents, statements announced directly by the Guards reflect Iran's official narrative and are difficult to verify independently. This report has no direct bearing on Turkey; however, the escalation of security incidents in the strait has the potential to affect energy transport through the region, and thus the global energy markets of which Turkey is a part.
