US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday that Europe had "agreed to release a very large volume of its abundant diesel stocks" and that the process would begin immediately. According to Iran International, the statement came hours after talks among EU members. Three sources who spoke to Reuters said European countries were considering a French proposal. Under the proposal, 50 million barrels of diesel would be released from European stocks and 50 million barrels of crude oil from members of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

French President Emmanuel Macron chaired a video conference with G7 leaders the same day. The leaders decided to release 100 million barrels of fuel stocks over four months, coordinated by the IEA. According to the joint statement, a significant portion of the diesel stocks will be released to the market within the first 20 days.

According to figures Ettelaat cited from the American Automobile Association, the average price of diesel in the United States has risen 70% since the start of the war, reaching $6.38 a gallon on Thursday. With less than five weeks until the midterm elections, this is a source of political pressure for Republicans. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer had distanced himself the previous day from claims that the stock decision was final.

How the Persian press covered it

The same development was presented under very different headlines depending on the outlets' orientation:

Source (orientation)Headline / framing
IRNA (state)"Anti-Iran rhetoric repeated; Trump backed down on diesel export ban"
Ettelaat (moderate-traditionalist)"Trump begged Europe because of Hormuz closure"
Hamshahri (principlist)"Fuel crisis is Trump's nightmare". Emphasis on the threat of sanctions against Europe
Kayhan (hardline)"A trillion-dollar fuel subsidy: The cost of the Hormuz war to the world"
Iran International (opposition)"Trump and Macron announce Europe has agreed to open its diesel stocks"

All domestic outlets framed the development as a sign of weakness and a retreat on the US side. The opposition outlet abroad reported it factually, as a coordinated decision taken at the G7 level.

Context

Iran International points to the continuing attacks by the IRGC on commercial ships in Hormuz and the Houthis' advance around the Bab el-Mandeb as the background to the decision. These two straits are the two most critical chokepoints for global energy trade. Releasing strategic stocks is a tool used to calm prices in the short term during supply shocks. How long the effect lasts depends on how long the supply disruption continues.
