According to Hamshahri, early Saturday morning saw an incident at Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia's eastern oil facility. The site, one of the world's largest crude oil processing centers and a critical artery of Saudi oil production, reportedly experienced fires burning for over 24 hours. A foreign worker at the facility was said to have alleged that it had been struck by rocket and drone attacks; operations were suspended.
By Kayhan's fuller account, within hours of Yemen Armed Forces spokesman Major General Yahya Saree's evacuation warning, the Houthis announced they had targeted Aramco facilities at Abqaiq, Hureis, and Rabiigh, as well as King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with missiles and drones. According to Kayhan, at least three people—including a pilot—died in the strikes. Saudi Arabia's national airline confirmed one pilot's death. Kayhan reports that around 326 flights were canceled in Riyadh following the attacks, with 192 delayed. Lufthansa, Air India, and Pakistan International Airlines suspended Riyadh service, and major disruptions hit airports in Jeddah, Dammam, Yanbu, Abha, Najran, and Jizan.
IRNA, by contrast, framed the event opposite—"Saudi Arabia launches missiles at northern Yemen"—with unclear sequencing of the attack. By AFP's feed to U.S. outlets, firefighters extinguished a blaze in a fuel depot at a tank marked Aramco near King Khalid Airport. Houthi spokesman Saree stated the strikes targeted "sensitive facilities" in Riyadh and Aramco assets in Yanbu in response to Saudi operations against Sana'a. Per AFP, airport traffic partly normalized after initial disruptions.
How the Persian press covered it
| Source (orientation) | Headline / framing |
|---|---|
| Hamshahri (Tehran municipality, principlist) | Reports cautiously, using phrases like "reports... claim" and attributing claims to workers; avoids stating responsibility. |
| Kayhan (Hardline, Supreme Leader's line) | Frames the strikes as "response to twelve years of Saudi aggression," providing operational details and extensive Houthi leadership statements. |
| IRNA (State news agency, government) | Frames it as "Saudi Arabia launches missiles at Yemen," positioning a rival actor's action. |
Context
Abqaiq is Aramco's most critical processing facility for prepping crude for export; it was also targeted by drone strikes in 2019 and temporarily affected global oil prices. This strike follows Riyadh/Aramco explosions reported October 7 and claims of a missile from Yemen to Aden, showing the Saudi-Houthi front remains in constant tension. Per AFP, air traffic partly recovered within hours; the gap between Kayhan's casualty and flight-loss figures and Hamshahri's more cautious "reports say" framing signals the true scale remains unconfirmed. Kayhan's claim that France was weighing air-defense help for Yanbu facilities could not be independently verified.
